提要:
The first guidebooks to the city of Paris emerged in the 17th century, and
those guidebooks consisted almost exclusively of alphabetical lists of streets
so that people could find their ways around the city. Beginning toward the
late seventeenth century, however, and continuing on through the 18th century,
guidebooks marketed French culture to people from other countries. Under
Louis XIV, it became clear to the king and to his ministers that exporting
French culture as a product could produce very lucrative returns. The question
this poses is whether we can properly speak of Paris as a global or world
city as early as the 1700s.
