From Stage to Screen: the Case of Hamlet Film Adaptations

The convergence of the most renowned dramatic work in the world and the
most popular entertainment form in the 20th century results in a thought-
provoking situation where the high art status of a classical play clashes with
the relatively low art status of a mass medium. During the process of
adapting Hamlet from stage to screen, it is essential for film directors to
make their own stylistic decisions. The present lecture researches three
English-language film adaptations of Hamlet produced either in UK or in the US
, so as to illustrate the appropriation of Hamlet the play in the context of
the cinema; the interplay between Hamlet the classic play and cinema the
popular medium; and the approaches of reading Hamlet adaptations as a new form
of text. The significance of Shakespeare’s film adaptation study thus lies
in the critique of these valid, new and increasingly important readings of the
Bard’s plays in an age that is dominantly visual.
主讲人简介：张瑛博士是南京大学外国语学院副教授，研究方向为莎士比亚研究与女性文
学研究，出版专著《银幕上的哈姆莱特》，发表学术论文多篇，主持教育部人文社会科学
研究项目“莎士比亚戏剧在当代中国跨文化改编与演出研究”。
